September News 2010

NEWSLETTER NO. 1

2 ième année Classe de Madame Villeneuve

September 2010

Bonjour parents:

What a super start with wonderful children, all eager to learn! Here’s a few things about our classroom that might help you become better acquainted.

A newsletter from our classroom will come out at the beginning of every month. Each newsletter is numbered so that you will be able to tell if you have missed one.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Our first Language Arts themes are “Bienvenue à l’école” (Welcome to School) supplemented with “Les pommes” (Apples). The main theme has a recommended list of vocabulary sight words and spelling words.

Spelling tests are every Friday morning unless there is a holiday. The dates of the tests are written on the list of spelling words attached to this newsletter. The children will also bring their spelling notebooks home on Fridays or the following Monday to share their tests with you. Please initial the test and return the notebook to school as soon as possible. The intention of the spelling words is to develop a bank of words for the children to easily draw upon in their writing. Spelling lists are attached to each monthly newsletter. Please keep the newsletter handy for the entire month.

The vocabulary words are words we are learning to read throughout the theme. Your child should be able to read them and know what they mean. Your child will be assessed on reading the sight words. A large part of homework will be the practice of the spelling and vocabulary words.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHNNY APPLESEED

Johnny Appleseed’s birthday is September 26. We will be making applesauce on Thursday, September 23 to celebrate this occasion. Teachers will supply the apples and ingredients for the applesauce, but students should bring a plastic bowl, a spoon and their own apple for a Math experiment.

READ-AT-HOME PROGRAM

Watch for the read-at-home program to come home soon. This is probably the most important homework your child can do.

LINK BOOK

The link book will be dated and sent home each day. Sometimes there will be a homework assignment, a special activity noted, a call for supplies etc. in the link book. Parents are expected to sign the books and help to see they are returned to school the following day. Children are expected to take their link books out of their bags and place them open on their desks each morning. This is an important part of our opening routine and it is very important that children arrive to school on time. Children enter the school at 8:40.

Link books, homework and notes can be carried back and forth to school in a ziplock bag or a special book bag that can be purchased at the school. Many of the children that attended grade one at Mountview last year may still have one of these book bags and are encouraged to continue to use them. If you would like to purchase one of these book bags please send $6 in an envelope marked book bag and your child’s name to school.

MATH

The emphasis of the Math curriculum is on the process of math where the students are encouraged to reflect on and talk about math through problem solving. We will begin the year with a patterning unit.

Throughout the year we will be doing “Les faits amusants” (Fun Facts) where the children work to improve their abilities with the addition and subtraction facts.

SOCIAL STUDIES

In Social Studies, Grade two students investigate life in three diverse communities in Canada. Based on their understanding of their own communities, students will explore characteristics of selected rural and urban communities in Canada: an Inuit community, a Prairie community and an Acadian community.

In September we explore mapping skills.

SCIENCE

Our first Science unit is “Les bestioles dans la cour” (Backyard Bugs).

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

We will be learning some games, developing our fitness through running and finding out the importance of cooperation in the gym.

The swim program begins on Wednesday, September 29 and goes to

Nov. 3. Please return the swim registration form as soon as possible.

If your child has long hair, please make sure to tie it back on swim day. Your child will also benefit from a nutritious snack that can be eaten before or after we go to the pool (depending on our swim time). The snack should be light and quick to eat.

WATER BOTTLES

The children are encouraged to drink water during the day, especially during their breaks and before and after phys ed class. They may bring water bottles to class, but as the space on their desks is limited they are asked to leave them on the back shelf. It is important that their names are clearly written on their bottles and that they are taken home on a daily basis to be rinsed.

QUOI DE NEUF

“Quoi de neuf?” or “What’s new?” is our showing, sharing and telling time every Friday morning. The children are invited to share things that are important to them as well as theme related items. Your child will be asked to bring or tell something once a month. Please take time to help your child plan his show and tell item. Ask him what he thinks he could tell us about it (eg.WHERE he got it? WHAT it does? WHY it happened? HOW he did it? WHEN it took place?) Theme related items are really appreciated as it is a wonderful opportunity for oral vocabulary development. Watch for theme changes in all subject areas. Remember that telling about something that happened or is about to happen is a great “What’s new?” item.

This month: Girls-Quoi de neuf-September 17

Boys-Quoi de neuf-September 24

ETOILE DE LA SEMAINE

Each week, a child is chosen as the Leader of the week. The children are shown at the beginning of each month who will be this special person for each week. The children are to bring 3 or 4 pictures of themselves that they share with the class and display for the week. The children are responsible to know when it is their turn.

SCHOLASTIC

The children will bring home Scholastic book order forms periodically. Cheques should be made out to Scholastic. No cash please.

SUPPLIES

Please refer to the list sent home with your child’s report card for supplies needed. Thank you to those of you who have already sent all the supplies. We’re off to a great start. Please do not send a binder to school as our desks are too small to store them properly. Also, it is very helpful if all money is sent to school in a sealed envelope with the child’s name and the purpose for the money.

LIBRARY

Our library day has not yet been set. Watch the linkbook for further updates.

ALLERGIES

Please make sure that I am aware of any allergies your child has. Remember we are a nut aware school. Please check labels on your child's snack and lunch items to make sure there are no traces of nuts.

VOLUNTEERS

Yes, your help is most welcome and appreciated. Let me know if you can help out on a regular basis or if you would be interested in helping out for special events and/or field trips. Please refer to the volunteer information package that was sent out by the school office as there are new regulations that need to be followed.

Looking forward to a super year of learning and working together to make your child’s year a successful one!

Summer Vacation

Link Book Note Thursday, September 2 , 2010

During the next week we will be talking and writing about our summer vacation. If your child has one or two photos (no more) that show what, where or with whom they spent some of their summer vacation please send it to school (name on back) tomorrow or the next day. The photos will be returned when we are finished this activity.
